BALIBO – Reviews

BALIIBO: Reviewed by Paul Byrnes
August 13, 2009
Long on factual fidelity, short on movie hyperbole, Balibo is tragic, dramatic and enraging.

Genre: Drama
Run Time: 111 minutes
Rated: M
Country: Australia
Director: Robert Connolly
Actors: David Williamson and Robert Connolly – based on the book Cover Up by Jill Jolliffe
Rating: 4 STARS

BALIBO is tragic, dramatic and enraging. It tells the story of many deaths – not just the five journalists killed in Balibo – with cold, hard realism that ... click here to read more and link to a trailer online

DELINEATING THE PLAYERS

As you can see THE CLAPBOARDERS are Team: 1 they direct events and give us everything that is good for us but we are yet to learn who is on that team for 2010.

Well THE CLIPBOARDERS are Team: 2 they rush about along ques with clipboards asking people what they think and why they think it even if it does annoy 'The Directors'. Shortly we will know who is on that team for 2010 plus what they have heard and then what they intend to do about it. As they say watch this space.

Budget

Why did the LFS committee not present a budget for the current financial year? It is our money so we should be told how they plan to spend it.

Film Soc

Why has there been no budget presented to the members? With the
amount of members' funds being handled, this would surely be imperative.

KITE TIME: Some Old & New Kites

OLD KITES:
  • Guest Memberships – No that's an idea that hasn't gone way or lost any favour
  • Committee Accountability – That idea just never goes away
  • Membership Participation – Now that's an idea worth another look
  • Prudent Budgeting – Another idea with multiple perspectives
NEW KITES:
  • Standby memberships – The membership you have, with benefits, while you wait for a vacancy
  • Associate memberships – The membership that lets you take up an empty seat at a showing after all members are seated plus other benefits
  • A name change to reflect 21st C possibilities – Time to look again at who we are, what we want and more interestingly what new benefits are there and that might be available to us!
  • A Launceston Short Film Festival – Just a kite for now – have your say!
  • Some Project Sub-committees/working Groups – Put your hand up
If you have a kite to fly eMail it to lfs@7250 and it will be added to the list
Let's keep talking!

ITS TIME: Put up or shut up

Throughout the year last year various people had various grievances to do with "the committee". Its time to clear the decks and start to put all that crap behind us so that we can get down to enjoying cinema.

If you have something to say say it! Better still put the issues out in the open so as they can be dealt with even if it is a little uncomfortable.

Here is your chance. Put the issues up as comments below and if you have a comment on the comments, have your say!

The society is entering a new era of inclusiveness where:
  • New ways of engaging with the membership are being fostered;
  • 21st Century possibilities are considered;
  • Openness and accountability is the standard; and
  • A 'can-do' approach to programming is actively pursued.
As they say, "watch this space!"
